I can find a lot of '83 where he is still amazing. Like the Candyman from this newly archived recording:

Things started to drop off sharply after the fall of '83. Even the NYE run of '83 paled in comparison to the Fall east coast shows that year, and it never got back to that level again. 89-90 may have been the best of the post coma era - debatable (east coast spring '87 was way more interesting), but I would take just about any show I saw in '83 over any show I saw in 89-90.
